MAC Extra Dimension Eye Shadow in Sweet Heat Review and Swatches

MAC is ready to hurdle through space and time with their new collection, In Extra Dimension!

The launch is comprised of two new products: a liquid-powder eye shadow ($20) and a liquid-powder highlighter ($29), both featuring something fancy called "prismatic reflections." I decided to try the Extra Dimension Eye Shadow in Sweet Heat for my ticket to the future, MAC-style.

I have no idea what "liquid-powder" means, but the Extra Dimension shadow seems like powder to me.

Still, it looks pretty cool in the pan. MAC Extra Dimension Eye Shadow in Sweet Heat is very bright and shiny, and I love the design. I think maybe the imprint hardened the top layer of shadow somewhat though, because I had to hit it quite a few times to load up my brush. It got better after roughed up the top layer a little bit, but Sweet Heat is definitely not the creamiest eye shadow around.

Sweet Heat is described as a "bright peach champagne," which is the perfect description for this lovely shade.

For this look, I applied MAC Extra Dimension Eye Shadow in Sweet Heat from my lash line almost to my brown bone. I used Urban Decay Darkhorse to contour and Too Faced Silk Teddy to highlight. I've included pictures in both natural and artificial light to try to show how much MAC Extra Dimension Sweet Heat shines, but neither really do it justice!

Can you see the prismatic reflections?

I am pretty darn happy with MAC Extra Dimension Eye Shadow in Sweet Heat. The color makes a lovely, neutral base with a special brightness that keeps it from being ordinary. I recommend wearing primer with this eye shadow to get the most mileage out of the shine.

What do you think of Sweet Heat?  Who would win in a fight: MAC Extra Dimension Eye Shadow or MAC Reel Sexy Dynamic Duo Eye Shadow?

SEPHORA + PANTONE Color of the Year Lipgloss Set Review and Swatches

This is my last post about the SEPHORA + PANTONE Color of the Year madness, I swear!  For our big kiss-off, let's take a look at the SEPHORA + PANTONE Color of the Year Lipgloss Set ($26):

SEPHORA + PANTONE Color of the Year Lipgloss Set
Top to Bottom:
Tangerine Tango Luminous, Tangerine Tango Vivid,
Tangerine Tango Glaze, Tangerine Tango Opal

My feelings about these glosses are mixed.  On the one hand, the SEPHORA + PANTONE Color of the Year lipglosses are bright, punchy, and fun.  On the other, the shades might be a bit much - only about two of them are flattering enough for me to actually wear.

Tangerine Tango Luminous gloss is orange with shimmer. It is very bright & color-saturated, but I felt the color was too harsh to be that attractive on me.

Coral and Purple eyeshadow!  As part of their brand-new Reel Sexy Collection, MAC has released "Dynamic Duo" eyeshadow pairs. I chose Dynamic Duo 1 ($27.50), which includes a coral with gold pearl and a matte violet-plum (the individual shades don't have names).

Ready for Your Closeup?: MAC Reel Sexy Cremesheen Lipglass in Star Quality Review and Swatches

MAC's Reel Sexy collection just launched April 5th, and the new products are all about bold, bright colors! I picked out MAC's Reel Sexy Cremesheen Lipglass in Star Quality ($19.50) to try first.

Juicy!

I wasn't feeling this color when I first applied it, but it has really grown on me. MAC Reel Sexy Cremesheen Lipglass in Star Quality is a pinky-red shade with a bit of coral.  The gloss is vanilla-scented with a smooth, non-sticky texture that is exceptionally easy to wear. It's brighter than pictured and way more fun than it seems in the tube!

The warm pink tones of MAC Reel Sexy Cremesheen Lipglass in Star Quality reminded me of MAC Impassioned Lipstick. Here are the two swatched side by side:

MAC Reel Sexy Cremesheen Lipglass in Star Quality Impassioned LipstickAs you can see, Star Quality has more red and orange in it.  I think the two still make a lovely pair, and I plan to try layering Star Quality over Impassioned in the very near future ;)

What do you think?  Is MAC Cremesheen Lipglass in Star Quality REEL SEXXY or a box office flop?

Hey BB!: Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm Review and Swatches

Blemish balms, or BB creams, have been all the rage in Asia for the past few years. And in the last few months, it seems like almost every makeup brand in the United States has jumped to offer their take on the BB craze.

In contrast to the thick Asian blemish balms that inspired their creation, American BB creams are intended to provide the perfect combination of light coverage, sun protection, and skin-beneficial ingredients like antioxidants. I decided to try Too Faced's Tinted Beauty Balm ($32 for 1.5 oz) to see if BB creams were right for me.

Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm
Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm

Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm claims to tint, prime, nourish, prevent and protect skin all in one step. I evaluated each of these claims to see whether the product was able to back them up.

Tint: Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm meets this criteria well. The coverage is definitely sheer, but the balm still imparts enough tint to even out skin tone and provide coverage. In addition, Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm has a luminous finish that leaves your skin satin-y and glowing!

Prime: I am not sure in what way Too Faced Beauty Balm primes skin. I think the product would work well layered under foundation for more coverage, but I don't know if that is "priming" per se. The balm does contain silicones, so it will fill in pores and leave skin smooth.

Nourish: Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm definitely meets this criteria. It contains a heap of plant and vitamin-based antioxidants such as ginseng, ginkgo biloba, and camellia leaf extracts. The balm also contains oil-free moisturizing ingredients.

Prevent: The product contains retinyl palmitate, a fabulous inclusion due to the proven wrinkle-fighting properties of ingredients in the retinol family. The antioxidants in Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm are also effective at reducing acne and preventing signs of aging.

Protect: Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm includes gentle, broad-spectrum sunscreen protection in the form of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

It seems to me that Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm has the ingredients to back up its claims pretty darn well! But how does the product perform?

My Experience

I have used Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm every day since I bought it.  Although Vanilla Glow looks like it won't match my skin, it blends in perfectly while still providing enough light coverage.

Because it has a satin finish, I get oily after wearing Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm on its own for a few hours. To cut down the shine, I layer Too Faced Primed and Poreless underneath to keep my skin matte for longer.

My favorite aspect of this product is the luminescence that it gives my skin.  It's subtle, but I definitely look more radiant and glowing once I put it on.

(Note the slight shimmer up the length of my hand)

I am also happy to report that this product does NOT break me out.  My skin is pretty sensitive, and face makeup often leaves me with more zits to cover than if I just went bare.  Thankfully, Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm is actually good for skin - I think my face looks better when I wash it off than when I put it on in the morning!

Bottom Line: Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm is a great option if you want to try a BB cream. It includes smart, skin-beneficial ingredients while simultaneously providing sheer, pretty coverage. I know I'm a fan!

Revlon ColorStay Long Wear Nail Enamel in Marmalade Review and Swatches

Revlon ColorStay Long Wear Nail Enamel in Marmalade
Revlon ColorStay Nail Enamel in Marmalade

In my previous post, I said that I would share pictures of me wearing Revlon ColorStay Long Wear Nail Enamel. This bright orange-coral shade is called Marmalade - I love it and have been getting tons of compliments!  My professor even asked me if I had a gel manicure - I guess Revlon was onto something when they decided to market ColorStay as an at-home gel polish. I think it's the opacity and shine that give the nail enamel somewhat of a gel look.

I applied the Revlon ColorStay base coat, a single coat of Marmalade, and the Revlon ColorStay top coat. I've used two coats of these polishes in the past, but I wanted to see if I could cut down the long dry time (discussed here) and make the polish easier to remove by using just one coat.

Because long dry time is a major con of these polishes, I am happy to report that a single color coat with base and top coats dries significantly faster than two. I didn't end up with any marks or imperfections from bumping my nails against anything as I went about the rest of my day. I was also satisfied with the opacity provided by a single coat.

There you have it!  I was already a big fan of Revlon ColorStay Nail Enamel, and I'm even happier now that I've cut down on the dry time by using one coat of polish.  My next plan is to try using a coat of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coatover the Revlon ColorStay top coat to get it to dry even quicker.

Has anyone else hopped on the Revlon ColorStay Nail Enamel bandwagon?  Have you found ways to reduce the dry time?

Inspired by the Color of the Year: Sephora Collection Be You Lip Stain in Peach Gelee Review and Swatches

In addition to the SEPHORA + PANTONE collaboration, Sephora's in-house collection has released a separate line of products inspired by the Color of the Year, Tangerine Tango.  These products aren't being as heavily marketed and they aren't packaged in as luxe as a fashion, but there were still some things that caught my eye.

When I read the Sephora Collection Be You Lip Stain in Peach Gelee ($12) described as a "self-adjusting lip stain with an extra-juicy, tangerine-inspired color," I knew I had to try it.  I love stains, and I've never encountered a self-adjusting one in the orange family before.

Sephora Collection Be You Lip Stain in Peach Gelee
Sephora Collection Be You Lip Stain in Peach Gelee

It turns out I still haven't found a self-adjusting tangerine stain!  As you can see, this one turned fuchsia pink on me.  The color still looks quite cute, but it just was not what I had expected from the name "Peach Gelee."

Sephora Collection Be You Lip Stain in Peach Gelee
Sephora Collection Be You Lip Stain in Peach Gelee

It looks like it should be peach in the tube. Sephora Collection Be You Lip Stain in Peach Gelee applies pretty sheer and the jelly texture feels nice.  The color blooms over the course of 1-2 minutes and lasts long after the jelly gloss comes off.  Since it is self-adjusting, I wonder how different the shade looks on other people.

Bottom Line:  Sephora Collection Be You Lip Stain in Peach Gelee is affordable, long-lasting, and has a nice texture. However, the name is misleading - this did not look peach on me!  It was like a fuchsia, lip stain version of Smashbox's O-Gloss.

Has anyone else tried this? What color did it turn on you?
