MAC Hey, Sailor! Lip Pencil in Shore Leave Review and Swatches

Let me start out by saying that I love lip liner. It makes your lips full and sexy and increases the wear time of your lipstick! But while I love lip liner, I definitely don't love THIS lip liner:

Yikes. MAC Hey, Sailor! Lip Pencil in Shore Leave ($19) is not cute. It looks chalky, applies unevenly, accentuates dryness and lines. To top things off, the tip of the pencil snapped off the first time I used it:

Formula aside, the pale, vibrant coral peach color of MAC Hey, Sailor! Lip Pencil in Shore Leave is cute in a retro, Sixties way. The color would have been perfect for my Brigitte Bardot post, but I doubt Brigitte would tolerate the uneven, chunky formula.

I applied one of my favorite lip colors, NARS Lipstick in Niagaraon top to see how MAC Hey, Sailor! Lip Pencil in Shore Leave plays with lipstick.

MAC Hey, Sailor! Lip Pencil in Shore Leave makes Niagara look a bit brighter, but it also detracts from its creamy finish. Though the lipstick covered up some of the chunkiness of the liner, I think my lip lines are still more visible than usual.

I will say this: MAC Hey, Sailor! Lip Pencil in Shore Leave definitely extended the wear time of my lipstick. Much more remained on my lips after eating and drinking than what is typical.

However, I don't think the increased wear time is enough to redeem the difficult application and uneven, unsightly formula. 

Sorry, sailors, but consider this ship sunk.

We looked at MAC Hey, Sailor Lipstick in Red Racer earlier today, which is a bright, yellow-based red.

MAC has also released a bright, yellow-based red lipglass that seems to be a perfect complement to Red Racer: MAC Hey, Sailor! Lipglass in Send Me Sailing ($15.50).

MAC Hey, Sailor! Lipglass in Send Me Sailing is a shimmer-free red lip gloss. Though it isn't fully opaque,  it has lots of pigment and is far from sheer. Like many MAC Lipglasses, the texture is somewhat thick and a little sticky.

MAC Hey, Sailor! Lipstick in Red Racer is a bright, yellow-based red. Despite its warm base, make no mistake -- this is not an orange red. MAC Hey, Sailor! Lipstick in Red Racer is much closer to a true red that shows hints of warmth in the light.

Though the Hey, Sailor! collection is pin-up inspired, MAC did not opt for an authentically retro matte finish for this lipstick.

Instead,  MAC Hey, Sailor! Lipstick in Red Racer has a satin finish, which means that it is creamy with just a tad of shine. I think this was a fantastic choice on MAC's part. The satin finish isn't glossy, so it is long-wearing and still looks pretty retro, but the added creaminess makes it much more comfortable than a matte lipstick.

While MAC Hey, Sailor! Lipstick in Sail La Vie has hints of red and pink, MAC Hey, Sailor! Lipglass in Riviera Life is a pure, bright tangerine with fine, multicolored glitter.

The color and formula remind me of the SEPHORA + PANTONE Color of the Year Lipgloss Set. Of the four glosses included in that set, I would say the MAC Hey, Sailor! Lipglass in Riviera Life is most similar to SEPHORA + PANTONE Color of the Year Lipgloss in Tangerine Tango Luminous. 

Although I enjoy wearing bright orange, red-orange, and coral lipsticks, I'm still not sure how much I like orange lipglosses. Orange seems more retro and wearable when it's in lipstick form to me.

Guest Post: Clinique BB Cream Review and Swatches

Hi, my name is Tammy. I blog over at Makeup Wishes about all things makeup-related. Today for Nicole Reviews Beauty, I am going to talk about Clinique Age Defense BB Cream SPF 30. 

Clinique is the first BB cream that I have purchased. It's been getting some great reviews in the beauty community and YouTube, so I knew that I had to give it a try.

Clinique Age Defense BB Cream comes in 3 Shades: Shade 01 for very fair with pink undertones, Shade 02 for very fair with yellow undertones, and Shade 03 fair to medium with yellow undertones. Unfortunately, there are no shades for medium to dark skin tones. For myself, I purchased Shade 01 for very fair with pink undertones. You can find swatches of all three shades on www.clinique.com.

The consistency of the cream reminds me of a full coverage foundation, but it's easier to blend before it sets. It does appear a little bit grey on the skin, which is a common problem with BB Creams. Here is Clinique's BB Cream swatched alongside three others on the market: Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Beauty Balm, Lioele Water Drop BB Cream, and Lioele Beyond the Solution BB Cream.

I actually like to mix a little bit of this with my regular foundation to cover the freckles and redness on my face. If I really take my time applying my makeup, I put the BB Cream in the places I need more coverage, wait a few minutes, then apply my foundation on top. This gives me the coverage I want but doesn't look very cake-y. It does feel a little heavy on the skin though.

If you are looking for an organic, natural or vegan product, Clinique BB Cream is definitely not going to be your first choice. The active ingredients included are Octinoxate 7.50%, Octisalate 4.00%, Zinc Oxide 3.50%, Oxybenzone 2.50, Titanium Dioxide 1.10%.

The packaging for the product is very simple, classic "Clinique green" with a silver top. The price point is middle of the road as far as high-end BB creams go. It's not as expensive as Dior HydraLife BB Cream, but it's more expensive than Garnier BB Cream. You can pick up Clinique Age Defense BB Cream at Sephora, Amazon, or Clinique.com for $37 - $40.

Overall, I think that the product is okay. Would I repurchase it? Probably not. I will use up the remainder of the product but will probably try another brand. Hope this review helps anyone considering Clinique's Age Defense BB Cream.

MAC Hey, Sailor! Eye Shadow in Barefoot ($16) is not your typical gold eye shadow; it has a unique brassy tone that sets it apart from the crowd. I wonder if it was meant to evoke the brass medals and stars that decorate the shoulders of high-ranking Navy men...

Just because this eye shadow is brassy doesn't mean it's drab. MAC Hey, Sailor! Eye Shadow in Barefoot is very bright with a lot of yellow. The unique color makes me feel like I'm wearing something bolder than the gold shadows I typically favor.

For this eye look, I applied MAC Hey, Sailor! Eye Shadow in Barefoot to the lid and blended upwards. I used Urban Decay Buck to contour in the crease and Urban Decay Virgin to highlight the browbone and inner corners of my eyes.

I'm impressed with the formula and color of MAC Hey, Sailor! Eye Shadow in Barefoot. It's a smooth, gorgeous, and unique brassy gold eye shadow. 

Now if I could find a sailor to bat my shimmery eyes at, everything would be shipshape.

MAC combined two of my favorite inspirations for their latest collection: nautical elements and pin-up style. I think they did a fabulous job with the packaging. The nautical stripes are adorably retro, but MAC made the design look more modern by placing them at clashing angles.

This retro-modern sensibility is showcased in the color of MAC Hey, Sailor! Lipstick in Sail La Vie as well. The shade is bright orange, softened by hints of red and pink. 

This lipstick would look perfect on a Fifties pin-up girl, but it also looks right at home on the trendy chicks of today. Tangerine Tango is 2012's Pantone Color of the Year, after all!

Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Golden Brandy ($15) is a fabulous "my lips but better" shade. The muted, golden red color is so subtly beautiful that I almost died when I first looked at it (I may be insane, but hear me out).

These photos don't do it justice. Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Golden Brandy is so flattering that it makes your complexion glow for a perfect, naturally beautiful look.

Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Golden Brandy has a glossy, moisturizing formula. The texture has quite a bit of slip so it feels smooth and comfortable. Glossy formulas don't last well through meals, but they sure look pretty.

Bottom Line:  Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Golden Brandy is a new favorite of mine. The shade strikes that perfect balance between color and subtlety for lips that look natural, kissable, and altogether gorgeous.

Inside, it contains four shimmery, baked eye shadows. These shadows are smooth and super pigmented. A single swipe deposits more than enough color.

The colors include a vanilla pearl shimmer, golden copper shimmer, olive green with gold pearl, and a garnet/wine shimmer.

I think this color combination is a bit unusual. The TANtalEYES Baked Eye Shadow Palette was released during the summer, but these strike me as autumn colors.

I haven't had the desire to wear these shadows together for a full-on autumn eye. Instead, I'll wear one along with more neutral shadows. For example, the coppery orange makes for a nice pop of color on the lid for summer, and the golden olive green is a good contouring shade.

Bottom Line: If you are interested in this palette, it is currently available for a nice price of $16. The shadows are very soft with stellar pigmentation. I don't like to wear all four shadows together, but I think that they stand alone nicely and can work well in other looks.

Clinique Blushing Blush Powder Blush in Aglow is a coppery peach with gold shimmer. The formula is soft and pigmented with a light, natural color.

This blush is a little less pink than what I typically prefer. I think I might try using it as a contouring shade in the hollows of my cheeks and dust a pinker color on the apples.

NARS Nail Polish in Trouville ($18) is cute, pretty and classy. The demure, seashell pink color is a wonderful choice for both work and play.

NARS Nail Polish in Trouville is sheer and a little streaky. You're definitely look at two coats, maybe even three if you want it TRULY opaque.

I think Thakoon for NARS Nail Polish in Lal Mirchi is my favorite of the NARS Nail Polishes that I've tried. Although Trouville is totally cute, I prefer the color of Lal Mirchi and the formula is more opaque.
