Tarte Call Of The Wild Amazonian Clay 8-Shadow Collector's Palette Review and Swatches

Tarte Call Of The Wild Amazonian Clay 8-Shadow Collector's Palette Review and Swatches
Tarte Call Of The Wild Amazonian Clay 8-Shadow Collector's Palette

I haven't tried a whole lot of Tarte's products. In fact, I think my experience has so far been limited to the Gifts from the Lipstick Tree Achiote Color Collection (Liked) and the Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer (Disliked). I was eager to try something new to refine my opinion, so I got my hands on the Tarte Call Of The Wild Amazonian Clay 8-Shadow Collector's Palette ($36). After trying it out for about a week, my opinion of Tarte has improved! This palette is nothing revolutionary, but it's still a wonderful selection of basic shades for a sure-fire pretty look.

Tarte Call Of The Wild Amazonian Clay 8-Shadow Collector's Palette is a beautifully selected set of eight complementary shadows. It's got a nice mix of matte and shimmer finishes in shades that are subtle, on-trend and easy to wear. Plus, it's got a good-sized mirror and leopard print packaging that many ladies are sure to love.

I love how the colors are organized in the palette. There are three main groupings of light, mid, and deep tones to make it easy for you to craft your look.

Additionally, I love how the shades progress from warm to cool. The shadows on the far left are very bronze-y and warm, the middle shades are fairly neutral, and the shadows on the far right are quite cool-toned. This organization also helps you to coordinate looks. While shades on either end can be mixed with shades in the center of the palette, the layout makes it more obvious that you probably shouldn't use a shade from the far right with a shade from the far left!

As for quality, thee shadows in Tarte Call Of The Wild Amazonian Clay 8-Shadow Collector's Palette are pretty nice. I found some of these shadows to be a little hard to the touch. The pigmentation is hit and miss. Some of the shadows have great color payoff while others are merely good.

All of the shades have adorable, jungle cat-inspired names too, which is pretty fun.

L-to-R:  Meow, Jungle, Call, Instinct

Unless otherwise stated, I experienced minimal fallout with these shadows. The shades in Tarte Call Of The Wild Amazonian Clay 8-Shadow Collector's Palette include:
  • Meow - shimmery bronzed gold. Good pigmentation.
  • Jungle - deep bronze shimmer. Good pigmentation.
  • Call - light peach with just a hint of sheen and shimmer. Decent pigmentation and some fallout.
  • Instinct - shimmery snowflake white. Decent pigmentation.
  • Wild - deep burgundy bronze. Stellar pigmentation and softness.
  • Lynx - greyish taupe matte. Great pigmentation.
  • Primal - light blue grey matte. Decent pigmentation.
  • Roar - navy blue grey matte. Good pigmentation.

For this look, I applied Call from lashline to browbone. I used Wild to contour in the outer third of my lid and in the crease. I also used Wild for some smudgy eyeliner along my upper and lower lashlines. I used Instinct to highlight my browbone and inner corner. I found all of the shadows in Tarte Call Of The Wild Amazonian Clay 8-Shadow Collector's Palette to be easy to blend.

The lasting power is fantastic. The shadows in Tarte Call Of The Wild Palette lasts for 8 hours without primer! I have oily lids, so that is quite a feat. I wonder if that's due to the Amazonian Clay that Tarte's always hyping in their products?

All in all, I think the Tarte Call Of The Wild Amazonian Clay 8-Shadow Collector's Palette is a great buy for a beginner or someone in need of neutral, everyday shadows. The lasting power is great and the quality is good.

It may seem expensive, but $36 for 8 shadows comes out to only $4.50 per shadow. Plus, the square pans hold 0.09 oz of shadow and the skinny rectangular pans hold 0.10 oz. This is double or even triple the amount that Urban Decay offers in their palettes. Sure, I find Urban Decay shades to have slightly better pigmentation, but you won't suffer with Tarte Call Of The Wild Amazonian Clay 8-Shadow Collector's Palette either. It's definitely a more cost-effective palette.

What do you think of Tarte Call Of The Wild Amazonian Clay 8-Shadow Collector's Palette? Have you tried Tarte's eyeshadows before?

Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer Review

Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer
Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer

I have mixed feelings about Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer ($30).

My friend Tammy over at Make-Up Wishes gave me a deluxe sample that I used all last week. I've given it a fair run and I like aspects of this primer, but I am sufficiently unimpressed overall that I've decided not to continue wearing it.

But first, what are the good things about this product? Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer is a clear, silicone-based gel. The array of 'cones in this means that Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer has TONS of slip and does a good job of filling in pores, especially if you add more product in places where they're enlarged. Plus, even though Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer feels slippery and a bit greasy when first applied, it sets to a powdery finish that controls oil well and makes skin feel super soft.

Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer also contains a host of natural ingredients that are great for your skin. It includes Malpighia Punicifolia Extract (Acai Berry) and Grape Seed Oil, which are powerful antioxidants, and Avocado Oil for moisture.

So what's not to like about this product? Unfortunately, the ultra-slippery gel texture of Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer has a tendency to ball up terribly. I ended up with quite a few balls even when using a very small amount of product. You can blend the balls out, but it's annoying and feels unpleasant.

Further, Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer contains Rosemary Extract, which can irritate skin or cause allergic reactions when applied topically. It's such a shame that Tarte included this potentially damaging extract in an otherwise impeccable list of ingredients.

I'm not sure if the Rosemary Extract is the problem, but Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer made me break out pretty badly. I haven't had a whitehead in months (thanks in large part to Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel!), but I had two the day after I first used this. It could be a coincidence, but I'm doubtful -- these new zits all but disappeared the day after I switched back to Too Faced Primed and Poreless Skin Smoothing Face Primer.

Bottom Line: This silicone-rich primer does a good job of minimizing pores and keeping oily skin at bay, but the gel texture balls up more than any other primer I've tried. And while Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer includes a bunch of healthy, natural ingredients, the formula is marred by the inclusion of irritating Rosemary Extract. Try this primer at your own risk.

Tarte Gifts From the Lipstick Tree Achiote Color Collection Review and Swatches

Tarte's gorgeous Gifts From the Lipstick Tree Achiote Color Collection ($42) takes its name from a Brazilian fruit tree that bears honeysuckle-pink seeds.

According to the product description, Brazilian women use seeds from the Achiote tree to tint their lips and cheeks. This beauty secret is the inspiration for the Gifts From the Lipstick Tree Collection, which incorporates pigments from the "lipstick tree" in each product in the golden pink trio.

Tarte Gifts From the Lipstick Tree Collection includes Achiote-pink versions of Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Gloss, LipSurgence Natural Lip Luster, and Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush. The Achiote shade is exclusive to this set.

And what a lovely shade it is!

Instead of being identical in color, the Amazonian Clay Blush, Maracuja Gloss, and LipSurgence are all variations on warm pink. They complement each other nicely and make for a great look that isn't overly matchy-matchy.

At first glance, Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Achiote looks like it has too much beige in it. But to my surprise, it comes off as a totally sweet, doll pink when applied. It's sheer, but not so sheer that you need layers and layers for it to show up.

As for wear time, Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Achiote did not last 12 hours on me. I think I went about 4 - 5 hours before I noticed some fading, and the blush was basically gone after 9 hours. I don't think that the wear time is particularly bad, but it just doesn't meet the 12-hour claim. Illamasqua Powder Blusher in Tweak lasts longer on me.

Tarte's LipSurgences are some of their most popular products. The moisturizing lip pencils provide sheer color, a glossy finish, and a subtle plumping effect. Tarte LipSurgence in Achiote also has a minty tingle that I enjoyed.

The color of Tarte LipSurgence in Achiote is a definite winner - medium pink with just a touch of warmth.

Tarte Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Gloss in Achiote contains healthy skin ingredients like Vitamin C to brighten, fatty acids to repair, and Vitamin E to moisturize and reduce inflammation.

Tarte Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Gloss in Achiote is housed in a click-pen tube with a brush tip. You have to press the button at the base of the tube quite a few times to get it started, but it flows easily after that.

Tarte Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Gloss in Achiote is a sheer light-medium pink with shimmer. It is somewhat thick and provides quite a bit of pigmentation. Like LipSurgence, Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Gloss has a minty tingle when applied.

Both the LipSurgence and Maracuja Lip Gloss are versatile and could be worn with a variety of other lipsticks and glosses. You also get a great look by layering the Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Gloss in Achiote over the LipSurgence Natural Lip Luster in Achiote. Color + shine = perfection!

Bottom Line:  Tarte has put together a gorgeous group of pretty-in-pink products for the Gifts From the Lipstick Tree Achiote Color Collection. The Amazonian Clay Blush and LipSurgence in Achiote are particular standouts. And considering a single Amazonian Clay Blush is $25, the set makes for a pretty good steal as well!

Sephora Collection Nano Eyeliner in Pure White 03 Review

Sephora Collection Nano Eyeliner - Pure White
Sephora Collection Nano Eyeliner - Pure White

One of my favorite beauty tricks is to apply a white eyeliner to the waterline.  It instantly makes you look more awake and brightens your overall look.

I am wearing SEPHORA COLLECTION Nano Eyeliner in Pure White in the above photo.  This eyeliner is very creamy and smooth, so it does not tug at your delicate lower lid area.  Available in 24 shades at just $5 a pop, this eyeliner is a great deal as well.

I have found that Pure White is a little harsh for some daytime looks though, so I am planning to try a light nude for something a bit softer.  So far I am considering SEPHORA COLLECTION Nano Eyeliner in Pearl Beige ($5) or Tarte EmphasEYES Inner Rim Brightener ($18).  Any recommendations?
